    Story

My name is Jason and I’m aiming to set a Guinness World Record by becoming the first person to travel at more than 90kmph or 55mph in an electric mobility vehicle, more specifically an electric wheelchair!

Why? Well I was always a bit of an adrenaline junkie and loved skiing, grass tracking, fast cars and motorbikes, but in 2013 I was given the news that nobody wants to hear. I was diagnosed with a terminal illness, Motor Neurone Disease and given 2-5 years to live. I was 37 years old.

Almost five years on, my life has changed beyond recognition. I have almost lost the ability to move and need full-time care. I will soon become completely paralysed, unable to talk and locked into a failing body that I cant control. But my mind will remain intact. There is nothing that I can do to change the inevitable, but I firmly believe that maintaining a positive mental attitude helps. The disease has broken my body, but it hasn’t broken my spirit and my determination to carry on living life to the full.

I have 2 little girls, Poppy, aged 5 and Lilly, aged 6. I know that I will not live to see them grow up, finish school or get married and they will probably be too young to remember me, but I want to leave behind a legacy, something that they can be proud of for years to come.

Since my diagnosis I have taken on several challenges for charity; completing the longest zip wire in Europe and the fastest in the world, becoming the first person to summit Mount Snowdon in an electric wheelchair and abseiling off the Humber Bridge. Over all I have raised over £25,000 for charity. You can view these challenges in the video section of my website at www.makingmemories.life

You may have seen me and my family on BBC1 DIY SOS, BBC Breakfast, Inside Out, BBC Look North East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire or ITV Calendar. I have attached a link to the latest TV news article on the world record attempt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8NCqGI6GdA

I have already convinced a company called Indra to design and build a bespoke electric wheelchair for me which will be capable of travelling in excess of 90kmph. They are electric vehicle specialists and have been involved in other unusual projects such as converting a Land Rover to electric and customising a milk float!. Their technicians are already working on the design and they estimate that the wheelchair will cost somewhere in the region of £10,000 in total. Tillet Racing have already donated a specialist seat and Indra are trying to source as many of the components as they can second hand or at cost.

But a project like this inevitably costs money and I am hoping that you can help. I am looking for sponsorship and need 20 companies to donate £500 each. If you agree to contribute, I will put your company’s name and logo on my helmet, race suit and the parachute, which will be necessary to aid breaking.

Let me put your mind at rest, if you are concerned about your companies name being associated with such a 'risky project'. This is categorically NOT a suicide mission. I want to live as long as I can, despite being terminally ill. The designers, engineers and technicians at Indra are absolutely brilliant at what they do and they have assured me that my safety will be their number one concern, apart from setting a world record of course!

The BBC have already started filming the project for a documentary for BBC 1 Inside Out and I expect that the World Record attempt will attract National media coverage. So it’s a win, win situation.

Any money left over will be donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) who do a wonderful job of supporting families affected by this devastating disease.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please consider contributing, so that we can make history together.
