The latest Wheels to Heal wheelchair rescue and reuse appeal aims to secure 350 wheelchairs and send them with the help of Caring Scotland to Lebanon.

Lebanon has seen an eternity of conflict and crisis starting from the 1975 civil war. Every community has been affected by war.

The wheelchairs will be given to:

1. The hospital in Beruit which is the central point for all victims of the four million cluster munitions that were dropped during the last days of the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon, an estimated one million of which did not explode.

2. Palestinian refugee camps. Some 450,000 refugees are registered with UNRWA in Lebanon, with many living in the country's 12 refugee camps. Palestine refugees represent an estimated ten per cent of the population of Lebanon. Living in camps for over 69 years the conditions contribute to poor health. Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are not eligible for free government-provided health care and 95% of them lack medical insurance. As a result, Palestinians with disabilities rely heavily on health services provided by local non-profit organisations.

Through the combined efforts of donors, volunteers, supporters and partners, to date, the Wheels to Heal project has helped rescue and reuse 1250 wheelchairs in countries such as Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, and Palestine.
