Story
This original piece, entitled ‘Watch Your Back’ The Musical, highlights things that happen in today’s society that we
may turn a blind eye to or don’t feel quite comfortable talking about and vocalising. I believe that the subjects covered in this production are easily brushed off and ignored within society.
I want to use this musical to help vocalise opinions from a young person’s perspective, as I don’t believe that the youth are heard enough. It is said that young people should get off the streets and stop all the violence and killing, but they may not have any source of outlet to be themselves creatively, and express their thoughts and feelings.
I’m currently a student at The BRIT School and I am studying Musical Theatre, prior to moving to The BRIT School I used to attend another school in South London where I felt penalised for having the passion for performing arts. My passion wasn’t seen as something to be proud of or “cool”. Now I would like to use this production to change that perception. As a young child I was tormented for not being very “smart” as I am dyslexic, I knew people thought of me as dumb as they would laugh if I couldn’t spell the simplest words correctly or unable to read something out loud properly. I constantly battled with myself making sure I didn’t use my dyslexia as an excuse to not do well through the educational system which didn’t seem to provide help for people with my kind of needs.
In rasing enough money this would allow the vision of giving young people a voice a reality, the money will go solely towards the production and the making of it, I believe that this is a valuable message that can make a diffence in our communities.
