    Story

On 3rd July 2022 Will and Toby will be competing in the Yukon 1000, a 1000 mile canoe race down the Yukon River from Whitehorse, Canada to the Dalton Highway Bridge, Alaska. They are taking on this enormous challenge in support of two charities very close to them, James' Place and the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Association (please read below for more on the two charities).

The Yukon 1000 must be completed within 10 days and is non-stop and non-supported, with us having to carry all our kit, food and supplies with us from the start to the finish. Described as the world's toughest survival and endurance race, the Yukon 1000 follows the footsteps of early adventurers, immersing competitors in the raw, untouched wilderness that few humans will ever experience. Yukon 1000 challengers must have the physical and mental fortitude to cope with the staggering feat of paddling 18 hours a day; just to complete the race. Completely self-sufficient, teams sleep rough where they stop, and in extreme cases must be able to survive in true wilderness. More people have been up Everest than have been beyond Dawson City.

James’ Place exists to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis by making the experience of finding help as easy as possible. It offers men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis a brief, intensive, therapeutic intervention in a safe environment. Men who walk through the door at James’ Place find themselves in a space where they feel valued and respected.

The first James’ Place centre opened in June 2018 in Liverpool, the first of its kind in the UK, and has to date supported more than 450 men experiencing suicidal crisis, delivering over 2,000 therapy sessions using an innovative therapeutic intervention. A new James’ Place centre will open in London in early 2022, and we plan to open further centres across the UK over the next three years.

The National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) is here to support all those living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) to allow them to live their lives to the full. Visit our website at www.nras.org.ukNRAS is changing minds, changing services, changing lives for people with RA and JIA
