Story
This is Zack.
He is 10.
He's got Cystic Fibrosis.
C.F is a life limiting and life shortening condition.
Having CF means spending days and sometimes weeks in hospital. Zack recently spent a month in the John Radcliffe for treatment of a severe bacterial lung infection. The treatment for it is time consuming, long term and is only 60% successful. The bacteria is so dangerous to other C.F patients that Zack has to be in isolation. He is not allowed to go to the cafe or the play room whilst admitted.
Zack has home visits every 2 weeks to check his lung function and take bloods to make sure the medicines he is on aren't damaging his kidneys and liver. The medicines he is on are highly toxic and unlicensed for children. There is a high chance they will cause Zack to lose some sight and hearing loss.
Things that are little known about C.F include the frequent upset tummies, the inability to socialise with other C.F sufferers because of cross infection and that people with C.F have to take medication every time they eat.
Zack's time consuming daily regime includes hours of physio and taking 50 plus tablets. Zack has to get up very early on school days to fit all his medications and treatments in. For the next 2 years he is on 6 antibiotics. Zack has already had 3 major operations.
At 6 days old he was in intensive care for a month. He has already had to cope with an NG feeding tube, a stoma bag and a port-a-cath. He has beaten MRSA.
He struggles with eating and is currently losing a kilo a week. Zack suffers from anxiety and depressive moods. Zack has a fear of needles, which is understandable as he once had 8 in a week. Zack is very conscious of his scars and insists on wearing a t- shirt when swimming or on the beach. He misses his friends when he's off school and was too ill to attend his sports day and school disco this year.
Zack would love to swim with dolphins. We are planning to take him in 2018. We need to go before his health deteriorates further and the cost of insurance is too costly to fly. We are asking for £1000 this is to cover flights and other travel costs. Please can we help Zack's dream come true by donating. Thank you
