Story
SUPPORTING A PURPOSEFUL LIFE
Our Goal is to address the needs of people with autism and other disabilities to lead productive, purposeful and sustainable lives through skills training programmes.
In the Philippines, a million people have autism. They do not have the skills to find jobs, support their own well-being and contribute to society. There is no government support to develop the skills of these people.
We aim to establish an arts and skills training centre that will empower the people with disabilities find fun and (particularly) purpose in their lives.
OLD WALLS WILL HAVE A NEW LIFE
Zambawood, in San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines, is a social enterprise advocating skills training for people with autism and other disabilities. Presently, the facilities available include a farm, a boutique house, and a café. All venues are used to practice the skills that our special residents have learned.
The new Art and Skills Training Centre will be developed by rehabilitating an abandoned, 30 years old structure into a new facility, consistent with its ranch/countryside setting. See Architect’s illustration above.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism is a life-long developmental disorder. The spectrum is wide, with varying challenges in communication and socialisation. Individuals do not "outgrow" autism, but as they get older, the symptoms may lessen or change as they mature. With focus, determination and patience, it is possible for them to learn and acquire skills that will give them fun and purpose throughout their lives.
EMPOWERING PEOPLE TOWARDS SELF SUSTAINABILITY
When a family has a member who has a disability, it is imperative to develop and nurture the talents and skills of that particular family member and create an activity that produces a sustainable source of income.

8 years agoDear All Thank you for the very generous support. We have now raised over GBP20k towards our target. Some more to go but we are getting there. We have just secured the donation of two shipping containers and will use them to speed the establishment of the training centre along. With best wishes Rachel & Keith

8 years agoThanks to the ABS/CBN Foundation who got us going, the Saturday Group of Artists and Green Sun Hotel who put us on the map as we raised our first PHP1million (GBP17k) . We still have a long way to go. Thank you to our dear friend Claude Verly for his support [on the occasion of his 50th birthday] to raise the next PHP2million (~GBP30k) to build the art and skills training centre. This initiative firmly puts us on the road to build a community for people with autism and other disabilities. Thank you for your wonderful support so far :)
