Story

I am running the Virgin Money London Marathon 2014 for The Children’s Society because the work they do changes the lives of children and young people every day as they fight childhood poverty and adolescent neglect.

As the Director of Children and Families at the charity, I feel a strong connection to our work and especially the work focussed on childhood poverty. Despite living in a country which is the sixth richest on the planet, we are seeing levels of child poverty that are unprecedented in my lifetime. This is an intolerable position and one which the Government could do more to alleviate, if it saw it as a greater priority. It was Nelson Mandela who said; “You can judge a society’s soul by the way it treats it children”. On this measure, the great man would see Britain today as pretty ‘soulless!’

That is why I am not only taking on the challenge of running 26.2 miles but doing so in ‘Huaraches Barefoot Running Sandals’, inspired by those worn by the Tarahumara Indians of North West Mexico. If even for just 5 hours, I will be able to visually protest against the plight of young people whose suffering goes unseen. To finish off the race I will cast off the 'barefoot' sandals and run truly barefoot for my last mile!

This is my 1st marathon and after taking on the 3 peaks in both winter and summer this is going to be my hardest challenge yet and keeping in line with that, I have set myself my highest fundraising target yet - £10,000.

Please sponsor whatever you can to help me reach my goal. The old adage of ‘every little helps’ has never been more apt. Thank you so much.

Damian

Dear Friends, A huge thank you to all who sponsored me. I managed the distance in 4hrs 31mins. I took off my sandals after seeing my daughter, Abigail just after 24 miles and ran the last 2 miles in bare feet to complete my protest against Child Poverty in UK today. Damian:-)

Dear Friends, there is only a week to go before the big day on Sunday 13th April - the same day as my Uncle Tom's 89th Birthday (see photo), who lives in Spain. Please encourage your family, friends and colleagues to sponsor me. I still have a long way to go with my target!

Have picked up a stress injury in right ankle after the half marathon but did a 12 miler last weekend at just below marathon pace, to determine impact. Have not run since, just rested and stretched. Strapping-up ankle for a eight miler, as part of the taper towards next weekend.

Dear Friends, two weeks ago I ran the Liverpool Half Marathon in my 'Barefoot' sandals, pulled a muscle in left calf after two miles, faced a 25mph headwind for the last 4 miles, and ran the last mile in bare feet! A perfect preparation, in a time of 1hr 53mins and 35 secs.

Dear Supporters, There are only 4 weeks to go to the big day! I am immensely grateful to all of you who have sponsored me. I have now raised £3600, with a boost from two recent corporate sponsors - i-people and Indigo. Nearly half way so please share the link. Best wishes, Damian

Damian, as you are aware the law prohibits acts of torture. Given that the gruelling ordeal you underwent was self-inflicted, however, I will accept the legal risk of aiding and abetting. Well done!
