Dave's Story:
Dave has suffered three strokes, the first in 1969 at the
age of 20. The final stroke in 1977 left Dave paralysed down his right side affecting
the movement of his right arm and leg. Dave now uses a wheelchair to help him to
get about. Dave has a positive ‘can do’
attitude and challenges himself to lead as independent a life as possible.
Talking about the zip wire challenge Dave said “I want to do the zip wire to
help fellow service users who are less able bodied than me”.
John's Story:
John is a former miner and chemical plant worker and worked
at Ashington Colliery for 21 years as a fitter. John was diagnosed with Multiple
Sclerosis in 1987 and as his condition deteriorated he had to retired from work
aged 52. Prior to being diagnosed John led an active healthy life and enjoyed
family time with his wife and two daughters.
Talking about the challenge John said “I admire those who put themselves
forward to raise money for charity, when the opportunity presented itself to do
the zipwire I felt this would be a good personal challenge.”
ConnectAbility Appeal
The Disabilities Trust plans to raise £250,000 over three years to purchase assistive technology communications equipment for those we support who have complex high dependency and multiple disabilities.
The ability to use assistive technology for communications has already been life-changing for many people we support at The Disabilities Trust; encouraging individuals to live as independently as possible and maximising their ability to make choices and to communicate.
