What is the Rohingya crisis?

The Rohingya population are a stateless people from Myanmar, many of whom have fled for safety to Bangladesh. In Myanmar, Rohingya men, women, and children have been killed, some were buried in mass graves, and their villages and neighbourhoods burnt. This has forced some 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh and live in deplorable conditions with disease and malnutrition spreading. UN officials and Human Rights Watch have described Myanmar's persecution of the Rohingya as ethnic cleansing.

What's different about your project?

The Rohingya Crisis Project aims to provide a long-term sustainable healthcare response by empowering the local healthcare professionals. By utilising the skills of medical volunteers, we hope to support the training, development, supervision, mentorship and deployment of local physicians to allow them to better respond through local organisations to the complex needs of the Rohingya refugee population. 

How do we plan to do this?

DWW have developed a bespoke training course to deliver medical training in 2-monthly blocks to groups of 20 doctors. As opposed to simply providing medical supplies or assisting clinically, we believe this project will enhance the local capacity to continue to respond to the medical needs of this vulnerable and neglected community. 

What is the long-term goal of the project?

We hope this projects provides a group of well-equipped clinicians with enhanced training and skills to be able to help the Rohingya refugee population and the country of Bangladesh.
