In the small village of Holmfirth lived a young man, by the name of Daniel Ubbi. He would have been 23 on the 15 January 2012.

He was a very special young man, was generous in sprit, fun loving, and was always there for his friends. He made friends so easily, gave so much to them and kept so little for himself.

In the too-short time he was with us he touched many lives, sadly, suffering from depression, on the 26 July 2011, he decided to end his life. Why? I don’t think any of us will ever know for sure.

Could we do something special to help others and ourselves, to come to terms with this tragedy.

A short while before he died he watched a program on TV about medical assistance dogs, and dogs that could sniff out cancer. He didn’t shut up about it for weeks.

Then at his funeral his sister told a story,  about him passing his dog off as an assistance dog so that he and his friends could get into a concert and take his dog in with them, rather than leave the dog behind….

We still can't believe he got away with it!

This sparked an idea why could we not sponsor a Dog for Dan, a canine ‘Super Hero’?

Medical detection dogs has two sides Medical Alert dogs and Cancer detection dogs.  The alert dogs are trained to alert to changes in a persons blood sugar levels, dangerously low sugar levels can cause a diabetic to lapse into a coma.  When blood sugars drop the dogs will warn their owner, get help and fetch any vital medical supplies.  Whilst the Cancer detection dogs are trained to identify the odour of cancer in samples, were hoping that the end result will be that an electronic ‘nose’ can be developed.  Such a device would provide a cost effective, non invasive cancer screening system which G.P.’s  could use quickly in the surgery.
