About Edinburgh Carers' Council SCIO
We provide individual, collective and peer advocacy to unpaid carers across Edinburgh. Our carers support individuals with mental illness, eating disorders, dementia, autism and learning disabilities.
Advocacy helps carers to be heard and to represent their views and needs. When a carer reaches out, or is referred by statutory services, for advocacy it is usually at an emotional and stressful time and often when things have gone wrong. A carer deals both with the issues of the person they care for and the myriad of social, health and welfare staff and systems. Advocacy will help to find ongoing support for the carer’s own mental wellbeing and provide support at meetings, completing letters/forms help to explain and navigate the systems.
Our collective advocacy work brings together carers to discuss issues of relevance to them and current topics in local health and social care services.
Our peer advocacy brings together carers with similar experiences to provide mutual support.
We support carer peer volunteers and if you feel you could volunteer to help and support others in a similar position please get in touch.
