Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In March 2013, my daughter, Georgina sustained a burn, which at the time covered about 10% of her body.  We were transferred from our local hospital to the Regional Burns Unit at Broomfield Hospital, part of the Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust.  Over the course of the coming months we became regular visitors to the Children's Burns Ward and Outpatient Clinic which is where we came into contact with he Children's Burns Club.

The club offers support to young burn survivors and their families to help them come to terms with burn trauma and altered body image.  They organise fun activities including residential camps, days out, workshops, parties and encourage the benefits of peer support amongst members.

This support helps rebuild self-esteem, confidence and expectations after a burn injury and along the way lasting friendships are made by the children and their families whilst giving mutual support to one another.
The Children's Burn Club is a registered charity under the umbrella of the Mid Essex Hospital Trust; the hospital fund all staffing costs.

This means any income raised or donated to the club goes directly to supporting the children, young people and families that need it to increase the support offered to them.

Georgina was only 18 months old at the time of her injury, and has no memory of the accident.  In the last year she has become aware that her scar made her 'different' as none of her friends have scars.  We were fortunate to be attending a Children's Burns Club residential weekend over the summer where Georgina met children of her age who had scars from burns injuries.  It would be fair to say that the weekend had the biggest impact on her and on me.  Georgina was able to meet children 'just like her' and I was able to have some time with other parents and the amazing Children's Burns Club staff and volunteers to talk, and offload some of the guilt that had been present for the past 3 years.  Georgina was thrilled to be able to go canoeing, without Mummy!

The Children's Burns Club supports the injured child right thorough until young adulthood and also supports parents, carers and siblings.  Knowing that Georgina will have this specialist support from now until she is a young adult means so much to me as does the opportunity for me to access support as and when I need it.

Although Georgina and I have only just started to use the support from the Children's Burns Club, I know that they could not do their amazing work with people like me fundraising for them.

So, I am going to run the London Marathon.  Those of you who have known me for some time may know me as someone who has never been the most talented or enthusiastic of runners.  I am happy to say that this is changing - I started my training at the end of October and all is going well.  I am already running distances of more than 10 miles and enjoying it.

The club has the motto of 'Dream, Believe, Achieve', quite fitting for my marathon journey.

If you could donate to this amazing charity, that is close to my heart, I would really appreciate it.  Just a £5 donation would go a long way to meeting my target and motivating me over the many training miles and ultimately the 26.2 miles on 22 April 2018.

All the money donated on this page will go directly to the Children's Burns Club, this falls under the wider Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust Charitable Fund, hence why this is the charity listed that you are donating to.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Updates 1

A quick update to say thank you to all of you who have already donated - I've passed the £1000 mark! It's been a tough running week - 20 miles on Sunday, 3 miles on Monday and then nearly 14 miles today. I'd underestimated just how much the 20 miles had taken out of my legs and today was a good run, but I was very tired. The best news is that the taper is underway - a chance to keep the legs moving but rest up in preparation for the big day. With just over 3 weeks to go I'm feeling very positive and thankful for all your generous support.
