We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

The event:

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Around 16,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year - The money donated here is being raised to help Brain Tumour Research, a charity that works to raise substantial funds for brain tumour research, whilst helping to improve the outcomes for brain tumour patients now and in the future.

We (Janet Lefton, Jeremy Lefton, Michelle Rothwell and Tom Rothwell) are preparing to take on Marathon des Sables - a six-day, 250km (155-mile) race through the Sahara desert, described as the toughest race on earth!

We will be completing the task, with a close friend in our thoughts, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year.

The Charity:

The Brain Tumour Research charity funds pioneering research to find new treatments, improve understanding, increase survival rates and bring us closer to a cure. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 in the UK.

·      60% of people diagnosed with a brain tumour will die within one year

·       Over the past 40 years, the number of people who survive for five years after a leukaemia diagnosis has more than trebled. The number who survive for five years after a brain tumour diagnosis has not even doubled

Research is the only way to change this for the thousands of people diagnosed with a brain tumour each year. The more funding they receive the faster they will be able to reach a cure.

The charity’s mission is to establish a network of flourishing brain tumour research centres throughout the UK, which together will put this country at the forefront of international brain tumour research. For more information on the Brain Tumour Research charity visit - www.braintumourresearch.org

The Event:

Commencing in Morocco on the 3rd April 2015, we will join over 1,000 men and women to complete five marathons in five days, followed by a double-length marathon of 52 miles on the sixth day – whilst enduring the sweltering, baking hot sun of the Sahara desert, which sees temperatures rise to 50C, while also carrying 9kg of equipment on our backs.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
