Story

We are a group of 7 parishioners of SS John Fisher & Thomas More, Burley in Wharfedale, West Yorkshire: Brendan Barrett, Kevin Crotty, Nicky Hopwood, Chris Inglehearn, Tom Lally, Keith Pitcher and Colin Robertson.

We are running in this year's Great North Run on Sunday 13 September. Our target is to raise a total of £3,000 to support two charities: Cafod, in El Salvador and St Anne’s, in Yorkshire and the North East.

Cafod’s programme Connect2:El Salvador is to help educate, support and protect poor communities. Funds raised will go to the people of Puentecitos, a small village near the border of Guatemala, who are improving community life by opening small businesses and using organic farming methods. see http://www.cafod.org.uk/Fundraise/Parish-fundraising/Connect2-sign-up/Connect2-El-Salvador for more information.

St Anne's provides a wide range of services across Yorkshire and the North East for people with a learning disability, mental health problems, issues around substance misuse and the homeless.  The charity has a variety of housing & accommodation based support and care, day services and community based support. Examples in the Leeds area include:

  • support to homeless people through a drop-in Centre, hostel accommodation and outreach services
  • continuous support to increase and develop new skills with the goal of individuals living independently
  • provide a safe living environment working in cooperation with wider care agencies and families
  • support an ethos of community living, and facilitate community links for individuals

see http://www.st-annes.org.uk for more information.

Funds raised up to £3,000 will be shared 66% to Connect2:El Salvador and 34% to St Anne’s.  Everything raised above £3,000 will be shared equally between the two charities.
