How to get a Gift Aid number
We explain the steps you need to take to get a Gift Aid number for your charity
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a scheme that allows charities and other eligible oraganisations to reclaim tax on a donation made by a UK taxpayer, which means donations are worth 25% more to the charity at no extra cost to the donor.
Who can get a Gift Aid number?
To apply for a Gift Aid number you must be recognised as a charity or Community Amateur Sports Club for tax purposes. To get tax relief your charity must be:
- based in the UK, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway
- established for charitable purposes only
- registered with the Charity Commission or another regulator (if this applies to your organisation)
- run by ‘fit and proper persons’
- recognised by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
How do we apply?
Can I join JustGiving without a Gift Aid number?
Yes! As long as you have a charity number or CASC number you can sign up for JustGiving here.
If you’re in the process of applying for a Gift Aid number, you can set up your JustGiving account and send us your Gift Aid number once as you get it from the HMRC, we’ll then start claiming Gift Aid on eligible donations made to your charity through JustGiving.
Can we claim Gift Aid on donations made before we got a number?
Yes, you can claim Gift Aid on donations made through JustGiving within the past 4 years directly through HMRC.
How does JustGiving claim Gift Aid for us?
We send Gift Aid claims to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in the first week of each month, for all donations made the previous month. It can take HMRC a few weeks to process claims.
Once HMRC sends the Gift Aid back to us, we deduct credit card fees and our 5% donation fee and send the payment to you that week.
We then pay claims into your charity’s bank account once we receive the payment from HMRC.
