Mumsnetters turn people power into donations
SWAN UK (syndromes without a name) is the only dedicated support in the UK for families of children with undiagnosed genetic conditions. They are an initiative of the charity Genetic Alliance UK. SWAN UK was chosen as one of Mumsnet's charities during their Giving Week. Mumsnet matched the donations once the Campaign closed
As part of Mumsnet Giving Week, the charity had one week to tell their story and inspire Mumsnetters to donate or fundraise for their cause and help them raise £2,000.
SWAN UK set up a Campaign Page on JustGiving so they could raise the money they needed in a short space of time. It was quick and easy to set-up, which meant the charity and Mumsnet were able to start promoting it quickly to each of their online communities. The Campaign Page also allowed the charity to tell their story, so supporters were able to see the difference their donations would make to families with children who have an undiagnosed genetic condition.
SWAN UK raised over £14,000 during Mumsnet Giving Week – smashing their original £2,000 target! Over 197 people donated to the charity, helping to ensure that SWAN UK’S vital work can continue.
“Every year in the UK, an estimated 6000 children are born with a condition that is likely to remain undiagnosed. Without a diagnosis, their families have no idea what the future will hold for their child. Families often struggle to access information, care and support. Many feel deeply isolated and alone. SWAN UK brings families together, provides information and support and raises awareness of undiagnosed genetic conditions. We were honoured to be chosen as one of the Mumsnet Giving Week charities and having a JustGiving Campaign Page helped us tell our story and raise money effectively so that we can carry on supporting these families.”
