Story

“And wed the single among you…” Qur’an 24:32

This year, Penny Appeal launched our remarkable Say, “I Do!” campaign – a unique new way to help the world’s poorest families enjoy the blessings of a traditional Islamic marriage.

We’re helping 100 destitute couples tie the knot by paying for the customary Nikkah wedding ceremony and Walima marriage banquet – providing a beautiful beginning to wedded life.

Our first priority is to help young orphan women across West Africa and South Asia, women who have no marital home, no family and no means to get married.

“There is no better structure founded in Islam other than marriage.”

The Prophet Muhammad (saw), (Wasa’il ul-Shi’a)

The importance of marriage in the Islamic faith

Marriage is a fundamental part of Islam. It is so important that the Prophet Muhammad (saw) is reported to have said: “Whoever gets married has safeguarded half of his religion.”

According to scripture, Allah (swt) created men and women as company for one another so that they may have children and live together in peace and harmony.

"He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts,” (Quran 30:21).

“Whosoever likes to follow my tradition, then he should know that marriage is from my tradition.”  The Prophet Muhammad (saw) (Wasa’il ul-Shi’a)

Yet the poorest families in the world simply don’t have the means to get married, find a home and start a family; they are excluded from one of the most important aspects of Muslim life.

It is a sad reality that affects orphans and young women in particular. The shame of poverty exerts such pressure that many are seen simply as burdens to their families and society.

But it doesn’t have to be this way – together we can make a difference! That’s why we’re aiming to raise £100,000 to give 100 Muslim couples a traditional Islamic wedding.

“When a husband and wife look at each other with love, Allah (swt) looks upon them with Mercy.”  The Prophet Muhammad (saw), (Bukhari)

Help a new couple get married and start a family by saying “I Do!” with a £1,000 donation to cover the full cost of their wedding.

Your £1,000 will provide the marriage ceremony, wedding banquet, the preparation of the marital home with repairs and furniture, and customary wedding gifts for the happy couple.

Or you can contribute one of the essential elements of their wedding, from sending traditional wedding gifts for £50 to helping set up the new family home for £550.
