I am running 214 miles across Scotland to help raise money and awareness for the charity Alpha 1 Awareness UK and the condition alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
Alpha 1 Awareness UK work to support and educate those with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). The charity brings those who have AATD together so they can share their experiences and be a support system for one another. The charity is also working to get treatments that are present in Europe and the US available to AATD sufferers in the UK.
AATD is a lack of the protein alpha-1 antitrypsin (ATT) which is produced in the liver. The main role of AAT is to protect the lungs. A deficiency can lead to life threatening lung and/or liver disease.
My Mum has AATD and as a result has had two lung reduction operations to help her breathe more easily and to give her a better quality of life. Without others in the past supporting research for AATD I doubt she would be with us today.
