We're raising funds for: St John’s Hospice, Balby, Doncaster,  by running the Reading Half Marathon in memory of our Mum/Grandma who was so wonderfully cared for by the Hospice Team during December 2013.

Doncaster’s hospice is undergoing around a £1.8 million transformation.

The scheme, which will improve and update the hospice, is mainly being funded by a Department of Health grant; support from the Cancer Detection Trust; and from the Hospice Charitable Funds supported by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) who run the hospice. However, there is a funding gap of £500,000.

So Doncaster folk are being asked to help staff and volunteers at St John’s Hospice fund raise to help meet the cost of this exciting project.

On October 7 2013 St John’s Hospice Development Appeal was launched which aims to raise £500,000 over the next 12 months. This coincided with Hospice Care week, which highlights the valuable and varied work of hospices across the UK.

Work on the revamp, which will get underway once the tender process in completed, will see the hospice, on Weston Road, Balby, completely renovated to provide a modern, welcoming, comforting and supportive environment for Doncaster’s patients facing a life-limiting illness – which include cancer – along with their families, carers and friends.

The extensive work will result in the relocation of the main entrance to provide easier access, and the conversion of the current ward area to accommodate ten ensuite single rooms. This new accommodation will provide privacy, dignity and a quiet personal environment at a time when it’s needed the most. The day care area will be completely refurbished and provide a calming and restful environment in which patients can relax and be supported by staff to better cope with their illness and where they can take part in creative activities. In addition there will be a separate entrance for ambulances to give patients direct access to the ward.
