Story

Success, we have now completed all of our challenges!
On Sunday 17th July we completed the Three Peaks 24-hour Challenge in a time of 21 hours and 40 minutes. We started at 4.55pm on Saturday 16th July at the foot of Ben Nevis and finished at 2.35pm on Sunday having just climbed Snowdon.
On 15th May, Rachel and I completed the Richmond Half Marathon, the third of the three half marathons in our challenge. My time was approx 1hr 40mins, Rachel's was about 1hr 45mins.
In March we completed the Reading Half Marathon in a time of 1hr 45mins, and then completed the Hastings Half Marathon a week later in a time of 1hr 48mins. For more info on the challenges, see: http://www.maths.lse.ac.uk/Personal/david/sponsorship.html

Now, here is our sponsorship 'spiel' once more....

My fiancee, Rachel, and I are seeking sponsorship for a number of gruelling events that we plan to take part in for charity this year. We are intending to run not one... not two... but three half-marathons, and then attempt the Three Peaks Challenge! Now, we're not silly enough to try to do these all consecutively, so in fact we are running two of the half-marathons in early March, one in May, and will then attempt the Three Peaks Challenge in July. What we are seeking is sponsorship to complete the whole package.
Our charity of choice is the World Land Trust (WLT). With Sir David Attenborough as its Patron, the WLT aims to permanently preserve and restore the world's rainforests (and other vital woodlands). Their work does, of course, have massive significance in reducing the impact of global warming on all our lives, and in maintaining the habitats of many endangered species of plants and animals. It may also have further value! For instance, did you realise that if many of the once plentiful mangrove swamps in South East Asia and India had not been chopped down, they might have dramatically reduced the number of casualties resulting from the Tsunami by absorbing and dissipating the waves? The WLT are looking into ways that they might be able to help with regenerating these mangroves to prevent such a wide-scale disaster in the future. It's not just about trees either. The WLT help create jobs in all the areas where they operate. They only have a small operation in Britain which means that far more of the money gets right to the heart of matters than is the case with some charities. The WLT establish projects at local level to maintain and restore the rain forests. These bring much needed investment to the area and assist with the development of sustainable income programmes for the local communities involved. Has it been successful? Well, to date, the World Land Trust has managed to preserve 300,000 acres of rainforest throughout South America, South East Asia and India. For more details about their work, please see here http://www.worldlandtrust.org/about/index.htm and here http://www.worldlandtrust.org/about/mission.htm So, whether you wish to sponsor us because of this very worthy cause, or simply because of the amount of effort we will need to put in to complete our challenges, please do sponsor us. The Events: Reading Half-Marathon - 6th March 2005 Hastings Half-Marathon - 13th March 2005 Richmond Half-Marathon - 15th May 2005 Three Peaks Challenge - 16th July 2005 (What is the Three Peaks Challenge, you may well ask? Well, it involves climbing, and travelling between, the highest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours. That's right, its not only the climbing that has to be done in the 24 hours, but also the driving between the mountains. The Three Peaks are Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.) Thanks in advance for your support. Regards, Dave and Rachel.
