We provide free Islamic courses to empower future leaders of our community

Story

Three years ago, I was at Hajj and I distinctly remember asking Allah for knowledge. Upon my return, almost immediately, an associate recommended Dar Al-Arqam. It was an easy decision to commit to because all their courses are delivered for free. I recall the first day I visited the institute, I was a little late, but as I entered one of the classrooms I hear the Shaykh say, “If you become dependant on someone then that person has a hold over you; he has an authority and an influence over you.” That one statement resonated with me. The Ummah is where it is today because it depends on others and therefore others have a hold over it. What makes things worse—at least in my estimation—is that we possess the potential to break that hold over us and excel in every field but we choose to be passive to our circumstances.

As I transitioned into a regular attendee and student of Dar Al-Arqam, I noticed a consistent promotion of practical themes like (but in no way limited to) empowerment, independence, responsibility, initiative, contribution and leadership. Over time, I found myself actively trying to embody all of these characteristics. After three years, alhamdulillah, I can confidently see the effects of my experience at Dar Al- Arqam: I am a better father, a better husband, a better member of my community and organisation, a better human and—inshaAllah—a better servant of Allah. But I feel the greatest and most significant change was not in my relationships, but in myself—and although I find it difficult to articulately express this point, I will try nonetheless.

Prior to Dar Al-Arqam, I worked in a small company for a reasonable salary without any expectation of change. I had no real aspiration for my professional career. Beyond work, I felt frustrated. I knew I wanted to do something impactful in society but I didn’t know what. I was detached from my community and unwilling to commit myself to local projects. I guess I lacked direction in life—not just for me, but also for my wife and children. But today, I work for one the largest corporations in the world with a better salary and a more rewarding role. I even run my own e-commerce business. I participate in local community-driven projects. I have life goals. I have a vision and tangible direction in life—for me and my family.

This is what Dar Al-Arqam has done for me without charging me a penny. My journey began with me asking Allah for knowledge. My prayer was answered. At Dar Al- Arqam I received knowledge in the form of instruction and direction. I received knowledge in the form of priorities and urgencies. I received knowledge in the form vision and goals. I have learnt things that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
