Story
In April 2017 I will be running the London marathon to raise money for the YMCA and in particular the work of Wellington and District YMCA.
Having grown up in Wellington I have chosen to run for the local YMCA to raise money to contribute to the support given to young people during times of hardship and need and who haven't been as fortunate as me.
The YMCA provide housing to vulnerable young people aged 16-25 regardless of gender, race, ability and religion for up to 2 years. The Wellington and District YMCA was founded in 1859 and over the last 25 years has focused on the needs of young homeless people. In addition to accommodation, the YMCA provides support and advice covering finance, health, education and employment issues.
Over the last year the Wellington YMCA has housed 42 young people for an average stay of 13 months whose average age is 19. After this period the majority move on to more stable long term accommodation.
The funds that I raise for Wellington will be invested in the 'Step Out' fund which helps young people who want to start to make steps into the wider world. It could be used for work equipment, interview clothes or transport to help tenants to get a job or volunteer in the community. It will enable young people to gain the confidence that they need to access opportunities and experiences that might otherwise be out of their reach.
All of your support will make a huge difference to young people in the community.
Thank you for your support.
Alison
