Story

I decided a while ago that I would like to take on the challenge of a long distance walk again.   Humphrey (my black labrador) will be my companion as I trudge from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm some 268 miles further north just over the border in Scotland.   We will mostly be camping on our way, but I will have some luggage carrying assistance, particularly for the 10 kg of dog food that I estimate Humphrey will consume!

Hopefully it will be like a holiday!  I am slightly puzzled, however, by some of the descriptions I read.  Apparently, it is "Britain's first and toughest long-distance path."  I've also read that it offers "great exercise."  I'm hoping that the "boot-sucking peat bogs" are no longer.  I suppose it will depend on the weather!  The famous Alfred Wainwright "got absolutely stuck" and had to be dragged out by a passing warden.  It seems he hated it!

This walk might be quite an undertaking so I have decided to make it my objective to raise money for a new Talking Book to  add to the RNIB Library by supporting the local Dunbar Community initiative.  This is led by Jackie Brown, a recent visitor to Belhaven Hill School who used to work in the kitchens many years ago, but sadly lost her sight.  She has inspired me to do what I can to help.

I hope that I can make this a really big fund raising opportunity for our local community in Dunbar. Having had a neighbour and friend who lost his sight completely after having a stroke, I have some idea how catastrophic it must be to cope in the modern world without eyes that can see. If you would like to help or you would like to be involved in the fund raising side of this little challenge I propose to do, please get in touch or simply donate now!

Thank you so much.
