The Homeless Warriors Team - Stephen Russell, Ruth Lee and I will be participating in CEO Sleepout at Watford Rugby Club in the spring of 2018 - date TBC We'll be braving the elements for one night, sleeping under the stars, to have a snippet of a taster of what it must be like to be homeless.
Steve and Ruth have spent the last year building up relationships with Watford's Homeless and has already been providing an outreach facility via bike and trailer, delivering essential supplies at ground level, directly to them - so far wholly done via donations from wonderful local community support and Steve has received many community hero awards this award for his work. Homeless Warriors are now an official Community Interest Company (CIC).
There's a lot of stigma about those that are homeless but everyone seems to forget that behind what they see is a person who is trying to survive as best as they can and that they're finding it really hard - they all have a story. We meet veterans with PTSD, some people have experienced violence and abuse and had nowhere else to go, some just poor luck, a relationship ending or job loss, resulting in poor mental health - 2 no salary months later, they're on the streets. Watford's Homeless Warriors want to change that stigma and try and provide a little dignity amongst the harsh realities of their life. A little kindness can go a long way to restoring faith in humanity and trust in services so that they feel able to reach out for help.
Homeless Warriors will use funds to buy and fill rucksacks with essential supplies, purchasing tents and would like to purchase a coffee cart and supplies which will distribute hot teas and coffee directly to the homeless at ground level.
We will also support local homeless charities and specific projects under the ONE VISION umbrella such as Random Café and GoKula who feed the homeless for free several times a month at various locations in Watford. All charities involved in the One Vision project work hard to help those who are locked into poverty, homeless, or at risk of homelessness.
