Trekking along the Western Front with the Legion to remember the incredible sacrifices made by all those who fought in the First World War and raise vital funds for the Armed Forces Community

Story

  • Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Please support us as we trek 50 miles of the World War 1 Western Front in 4 days to raise money for The Royal British Legion in the year that is the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One.

Formed in May 1921, The Royal British Legion help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans and their families all year round – campaigning to improve their lives, organise the Poppy Appeal and remember the fallen.

The Royal British Legion offer support every step of the way for veterans, young and old. Supporting ex-Servicemen through their transition into civilian life; helping with employment, financial issues, respite and recovery, through to lifelong care and independent living. Their support starts after seven days of service and continues long after life in the Armed Forces.

The British Legion was formed by four national organisations of
ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after the First World War. The main purpose of the Legion was straightforward: to care for those who had suffered as a result of service in the Armed Forces during the war, whether through their own service or through that of a husband, father or son.

Over six million men had served in the war - 725,000 never returned. Of
those who came back, 1.75 million had suffered some kind of disability and half of these were permanently disabled.

As a result of the war, Britain's economy plummeted and in 1921 there were two million unemployed. The Royal British Legion was formed this year and began the tradition of an annual Two Minute Silence in memory of the dead, the first Poppy Day was held on 11 November 1921

The 3 of us met at University and have known each other for 36 years and have walked annually for over 20 years completing many great long distance walks in the UK. This year we have chosen this walk and in so doing hope to help a great charity and the people it supports , have a great walk , meet new friends and honour the memory of all those who died in  World War 1.
