So what am I doing...... Well it's not just 1 thing, it's a series of endurance challenges:

  • UK 3-Peaks 24 hour Challenge in October 2018
  • Winter Fan-Dance in January 2019
  • Trek to Everest Base Camp in May 2019
  • Summer Fan-Dance in July 2019

There may be more along the way which I will add as I go along....

So, why St Barnabas House......

It was probably early July 2012 when I first spoke to Penny at St Barnabas House and realised that Dad was actually much worse than he was letting on.  At the time I was living in Brisbane, Australia and Dad was in Littlehampton, West Sussex.

Following a few discussions with Penny it became clear that I had to come back and made plans to head back to be near Dad.  I was expecting to spend a few months in Littlehampton and was planning to fly across early August.  My plan was to be around to help out, cook, make sure he was eating well......... etc.

On 25th July, 9 days after Dads 72nd birthday things changed pretty quickly.  I spoke to Dad and it was clear that he was even worse.  I got on the internet straight away and booked a flight out of Brisbane leaving on 27 July 2012 and arriving in London on the first day of competition in the 2012 Olympic Games.

Making my way to Littlehampton (the long way round - as the A24 was closed for the Cycle Road Race) I was a little apprehensive about what I would find.

I got to Dads to find him in a pretty bad way.  The cancer was well advanced and by the time I had got there he was bed bound and no longer able to get up.

St Barnabas House had arranged for him to have a hospital bed installed in the living room and all the other bits and bobs he needed to be comfortable.  Nurses came in twice a day to care for dad.  It was difficult to watch and see.  The man that was always my rock, the one I looked up to, was now pretty much helpless and incoherent a lot of the time due to the amount of morphine he needed just to keep the pain at a manageable level.

For 1 week I spent time at Dad's bed side, at his home, surrounded by the people and things he knew and loved 24/7.

All this made possible by the Hospice at Home Service which St Barnabas had just started.

Thanks to St Barnabas my Dad, my rock, by mate was able to spend his final weeks, days, hours at home finally letting go in the early hours of Saturday 4th August 2012.

Had it not been for St Barnabas House Dad may have had to spend his final weeks in a random, bleak hospital room, heading for the unknown, surrounded by the unknown......

Following Dad's death, St Barnabas continued to support my Step-Mother (Gerry Lee-Uff-Zyms) and helped her deal with her grief.

That's why - St Barnabas House!  Please help these guys do for many more what they did for my Dad........
