Fundraising for Diabetes UK
Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In January 2016 my brother Martyn was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which I am sure he will agree has been life changing. At first he had to check his blood sugars up to 12 times a day and inject himself with insulin 4 times a day. Although he does not have to check them as frequently now he still has to administer insulin 4 times a day. He cannot go anywhere without a bag of medication. He has to monitor everything he does and eats, then adjust his insulin accordingly. Although he now lives with diabetes I cannot imaging the psychological impact this may have had on him. He is strong and in control but many people are not.
Martyn is not the only person I know who has diabetes. As a nurse I see day to day the reality of the disease and how it can affect individuals. Having 1 hypo can ruin the rest of your day. But you still have to work and continue as everything is ok.
My brothers and I have been entered into a trial to see if we had the same antibodies as Martyn. I found out today (30/12/16) that I have a positive test which means I potentially could also develop diabetes. I will go for further testing and hopefully they are going to try and prevent me from developing Type 1 diabetes. They will monitor me until I am 45. Further testing will confirm if this will be necessary.
Without charities like Diabetes UK this type of research would not exist. It is hoped that people like me being entered in trials will one day result in prevention of Type 1 diabetes.
Diabetes UK also provide support for thousand of individuals and their families.
