Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Friday 15th March I will be taking part in the Jerusalem Marathon 2019 to run for Shabbat Walk in Israel.

I am fundraising for the Shabbat Walk which sees over 300 young volunteers visit a number of different families, care homes and hospitals each week.

When I first got involved with the Shabbat walk, I could never have imagined how far this project could go. I have many inspiring stories that have occurred. Just to name one that’s stuck with me . One shabbos, together with my walking partner, we set out on our usual journey. This time it was to Barnet hospital. A 3 hour walk in the rain. We had been visiting Stephan for some time now, following him from hospital to hospital, be it royal free, Edgware hospital or finchely memorial. As we walked, we didn’t realise that this would be our last time we would ever see Stephan. We arrived in high spirits. We were then told that Stephan had been moved to the icu. We walked down to the icu where we witnessed Stephans wife and son crying by the entrance. Stephans son came over to us to inform us of the seriousness of Stephans condition. We pleaded that we could have 1 minute with Stephan. Walking towards Stephan we could see his body shaking and the terror in his eyes. We thought we would do the thing that stephan always looked forward to the most. In that 1 minute, we recited a dvar Torah from the parsha. We could see that every bone of Stephan was uncontrollably shaking, but as the words of Torah came out of our mouths, he managed to be able to control his eyes and ears and it was clear he was able to hear and see what we were saying. In all his pain, Torah always came first for him. This was our last memory of Stephan. Early next morning, Stephan passed away. I will always remember his warmth and happiness he showered over us whenever we went to see him. He was so caring and happy, He made us feel like he was visiting us instead of the other way round.

The money raised in this marathon will help to facilitate the Shabbat Walk Israel project enabling Yeshiva and Seminary students to give up their spare time to take out special needs children and visit those in hospital. This project promotes hours of Chessed and helps to enhance the Yeshiva/Sem experience by giving opportunities to all. I have witnessed first hand countless times, the way in which volunteering changes a teenagers outlook in life into a more positive one. We try our best to make volunteering as easy as possible for teenagers and are relying on your help to make it possible for us to continue aiding volunteers and helping the hundreds of families, elderly and sick.
