Refugees At Home

We connect kind people with spare rooms to host refugees and asylum seekers

Charity Registration No. EW61215

Story

Refugees At Home is a small group trying to respond to the current refugee crisis by finding temporary housing for destitute asylum seekers and recent refugees while they find something permanent.  They do this by matching them with hosts who offer a spare room - or sometimes, for emergency placements, a sofa bed in the living room.

Since they started in early 2016, they have made more
than 400 placements with hosts who have a spare room and a kind heart. This actually translates into nearly 17,000 nights not spent on the street or riding the night busses.

A family friend of mine recently hosted a very nice young man called Shanan (Mohamad). I had the pleasure of meeting him in person where he told me a bit about his story :

“My name is Mohamad, I am from Aleppo, Syria I flew from Syria a few years ago. I had to leave because of the army. They tried to force me to join them I refused, they arrested me once (because of my occupation as a photographer ). And as soon as they let me go, my family decided to send me out of Syria, I was travelling alone for the first time. The Death journey took me nearly three months crossing oceans by boat, busses, lorries and airplane. After six months when I got to the UK I obtained a 5 years leave to remain status so I moved in to London to get a job, I was homeless at this time, I tried to contact many people and organisations to find me a place but couldn't till I heard about Refugees at Home. I phoned them and they really helped me out. They got me a spare room with a lovely family to stay with. I really appreciate everything they've done for me. I gained a lot of valuable experience and was able to learn about the new culture I found myself in. I would like very much thank Refugees At Home”

Refugees at Home is an entirely volunteer-run organisation working on a zero budget and any money they receive they use to help the hosts fund extra costs for their guests such as travel cards or phone top-ups.
