Story
Yesterday was Mother's day and hopefully everyone celebrated how amazing their mum is! As you're all probably aware, it will soon be a year since our mum died. Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer about 9 years ago now and was given the all clear for quite a few years. Then a few years ago we were told she had secondary breast cancer, and in February 2018 she was given a few weeks left to live. (Mum of course wasn't having any of that and she pushed on for another 2 months) She died on the 22nd April 2018, and she was amazing right up until the end.
It's been a very strange year, and it still doesn't feel real most of the time. The whole thing is awful and scary and heart breaking but in many ways it has made us all more aware of how important it is to keep checking your boobs and know yourself and what is normal for you.
Just before mum died, we found out that our sister Sophie, who was only 25 at the time, was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily, she caught it early and has been through some treatment and is now doing great. But it just shows that it can happen to anyone, doesn't matter how old you are.
So anyway, I've signed up to do the Walk the Night 2019 Marathon for Coppafeel. I don't think I could manage a run lol, but also Walk the Night is specifically for raising awareness and money for Breast Cancer (and Prostate Cancer) which is something that's obviously important to me. If there's a way to make a little difference, hopefully this is something.
Coppafeel focuses on educating, particularly young people, about breast cancer and how to spot it early, as the sooner this is done the more options you have and so higher the survival rate. 1 in 7 women in the UK will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It doesn't just happen to women though, and boys/girls/non-binary should all be having a regular feel!
I'll be walking for mum and Soph and anyone else that's been through or going through something similar. Hopefully I'll raise some money but probs more importantly, if you can't give any money, at least please check your boobs!!
You can sign up for a monthly reminder and they have a boob check 101: https://coppafeel.org/your-boobs/boob-check-101/
