BirdLife's Important Bird & Biodiversity Area (IBA) Programme aims to identify, document, monitor and protect a network of globally significant sites.  As of today, more than 11,000 IBAs are recognised and represent the most vital places for the conservation of the world's birds along with much other threatened and endemic biodiversity.
