Story
I've had a few mad ideas in my time, but this one tops them all!
...on the 8th May 2016, I shall be running the Hackney Half marathon on behalf of the Alzheimer's Society.
It is a charity that is close to myself and my family's heart, and I want to support all the great work that this charity does. Dementia can happen to anyone, and currently there is no cure.
Dementia currently affects over 850,000 people in the UK. My Grandad is 1 of them.
My Grandad, Harry Astell was, and is still, a great man. I grew up with him telling me stories of his time in the merchant navy, watching him conquer mountains of ironing, realising he'd fallen asleep in his armchair by the loud snores, never understanding his love of spring onions, and seeing how much he adored my Grandma even though he'd play the occasional trick on her and she'd tell him off for taking all the good roast potatoes. All these things make my Grandad what he is to me, and seeing the effect that dementia has had on him is indescribable.
Alzheimer's Society provide information and support, fund medical and social research, and campaign for better quality of life for people living with dementia and a greater understanding of the condition. With over 3,000 community based services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, they are the first point of call for anyone dealing with dementia; from those suffering with the condition, to family members and healthcare professionals.
If you would like to sponsor me for such an amazing charity so that they can continue all the incredible work they do, I will be eternally grateful! I will also be mightily grateful to any cheering on, on the day (with probably a few laughs at my expense too!).
Thank you,
Coralie x
