Our son Callan tragically took his own life on the morning of the 10th of September 2011. Callan’s life revolved around writing; he was a keen observer of everything around him, using his poems and short stories to understand and communicate the way in which he viewed the world. Callan has left his fingerprints on all our lives and will never be gone from our hearts and our memories.

In memory of Callan and his love of writing, our family set up the Callan Gordon Award. The award offers a place on Scottish Book Trust’s New Writers Programme and is open to short story writers and poets between the ages of 18 and 35.

Every two years, our family fundraises for the award. We are now fundraising for the 2023 award. Please donate to our page and help to ensure that Callan’s passion for writing continues to support others.

You'll be supporting people like Karen who won the award in 2016 and has recently had a TV show commissioned. She said ‘Winning Callan's award has changed my life. I don't say that lightly. It helped build my confidence. I’ve met some lovely people: I've received nothing except unwavering support from Scottish Book Trust and my fellow New Writers. If it hadn't been for Callan, if it hadn't been for this award, I would have given up. Callan made such a huge difference in peoples' lives, and he continues to do so.’

Sasha who was the recipient in 2018 told us that he is 'utterly overwhelmed to have this opportunity, it’s such an encouragement and I hope to use it well. I’m really grateful to the Scottish Book Trust and the Gordon family and everyone who’s supported me in this.'

We are glad that Callan’s memory lives on in the Callan Gordon Award for New Writers with Scottish Book Trust.
