We fund research into type 1 diabetes to find a cure for type 1 diabetes

Story

Earlier this year, in April, Laura-Beth Freslov was diagnosed with T1. At the time Laura-Beth did not seem ill but her appearance over preceding months had changed. In particular her thirst was incomprehensible. It got to the stage where I thought she was developing an obsession with drinking and I even told her to stop. She was consuming at least 10 pints a day at the time !

As other changes started to show we started to question the probable cause. A difference was now noticeable and after some small research we had already started to question the possibility of Diabetes.

On a Sunday evening in April Laura-Beth began to complain of stomach aches at bed time, and to pacify her pain she was offered an opportunity to share the parental bed, a treat for all kids ! but the pain didn’t go. It got worse.

At around 5 in the morning, when she could sleep no longer, I had already decided that she would go to the hospital when the other kids got up and the pain was now obvious. Laura-Beth was going through a Diabetic Ketoacidosis attack. At the time we had no idea or knowledge of Diabetes but an acidosis attack, we have now learned, is as bad as you can imagine.

We took Laura-Beth to hospital where various tests were done and the diagnosis concluded. She had TI Diabetes. I cannot begin to tell you how courageous she was at the time, or how she remained in control of her emotions despite her parents not. She took the life changing news in her stride and it was actually us who had to catch up with the maturity. True to her character she has been responsible and exemplary since diagnosis injecting herself since day 2 ! That means to date she has tested her blood no fewer than 1,600 times and had a minimum of 750 insulin injections.

There is no cure. There is no transplant available. Its for life
