On the 8^th of June I will be celebrating my 51^st
birthday by gliding down the wonderful Wales Millennium Centre (WM C)
with style and finesse – or dangling inelegantly off a rope, depending on how it goes!

I have chosen to join the team from the WMC for this challenge for two
reasons. Firstly, as you may not know, the WMC is not only a world-class
entertainment venue but it is also a charity whose aims include making the performing arts accessible to everyone regardless of their personal circumstances.
As a child, I was very lucky to have the opportunity to learn musical
instruments, to act and to attend concerts and plays. I believe that these things bring everyone pleasure, purpose and joy. In my role as a teacher I see how many of our young people do not have these opportunities and I am delighted to support the WMC in its mission to open theatre and music to as many people as possible.

My other reason is rather more personal. Those of you who know me
well will be aware that I have had some serious problems with depression in recent years and often felt isolated. Being a volunteer usher at the WMC has helped me immeasurably. It has given me a wonderful reason to get out and meet others - I have made some wonderful friends and been privileged to experience some superb
performances.

The team at the Centre are hard-working, welcoming and dedicated
and I hope you will feel able to support this brilliant charity by sponsoring me to abseil down my second home and favourite building in the world. Your sponsorship will be used to support programs for children and young people who might otherwise never have an experience of top-quality theatre or music. It will also enable the WMC to reach of all sorts, to make everyone welcome and to take some of the wonderful work out into communities across Wales.

There are two routes for abseiling. Altogether 90 people
will be taking part and most will abseil 17m down the building. A lucky
few who raise enough money will be able to complete a 34m abseil over the iconic letter wall on the front of this wonderful building. I would LOVE to be one of those few – what a birthday treat that would be!
