Story

We are raising money for a very small Charity called Little People UK, it supports people with dwarfism. Our very dear eight year old granddaughter, Betsy, has hypochondroplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. She spent the first seven weeks of her life in Brighton's children's hospital having multiple seizures where she stopped breathing, but her dwarfism wasn't diagnosed until after her first birthday. There are over 200 different types of dwarfism, all of which have medical complications to add to the challenges of short stature and disproportionate limbs.

Betsy has a wonderful disposition. She is a very active girl and is whizz on a bike and skates. But life is full of challenges for her and she hates being different. Spending time with other similar to herself and feeling part of the Little People community has been very beneficial and that is where the work of LPUK, and attending their events, has been so important to Betsy and her family.

On the 18th May, Stewart & I set off to walk some of the Camino De Santiago. It was a month before my 79th Birthday. I had trained hard in all weathers since Jan 1st, clocking up around 650 walking miles. We are now back It was a truly amazing journey. We excelled ourselves. The 1st day was the hardest with very tough underfoot terrain, easy to fall! The 2nd day started with 3 miles uphill which was steep but I find that easier than downhill which was often very scary. However, we both walked 75+ miles in 6 days. I couldn’t believe that I walked 15 miles on both Tuesday and Wednesday then 12 the next day. Everyday’s walk was very hilly. The views were stunningly beautiful and the weather kind to us. Cold early in the morning, then sun later in the day. We stayed in a Monastery in Santiago. The walk into Santiago was quite emotional for us all, for various reasons. I am very passionate about the Charity we are supporting.

Little People UK is a registered charity in England, that provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with dwarfism while celebrating with great pride, little people’s contribution to social diversity. We aim to be an essential resource for little people and their families. We offer friendship, support and advice to all little people in the UK and we campaign to ensure that all little people are portrayed in the media in a positive way.
