We help people with ME/CFS to understand and survive their illness

Story

A few months back I decided to undertake a challenge in recognition of my mum, who for over a decade has been bravely fighting the battle with ME (Myalgic encephalomyelitis), and of all the others who suffer the impact of this life changing, horribly complex, chronic and misunderstood medical condition.

(My = muscle; Algic = pain, Encephalo = brain; Mye = spinal cord; Itis = inflammation). Symptoms can be multiple and vary from person to person but common symptoms include over exertion, short-term memory loss & concentration difficulties, muscle & nerve pain, muscle weakness, noise & light sensitivity, sleep and temperature disturbance. It is a serious long-term illness and disability.

Together with a friend, I will attempt to cycle 260miles unsupported on the Summer Solstice, June 21st, starting at sunrise from Darlington, County Durham, and trying to beat the setting sun back to our hometown St Albans, Hertfordshire.

In the grand scheme of things it is only a small effort but I'm hoping to raise awareness of the challenges faced by ME sufferers and funds to support the critical research by the ME Association into this crippling disease.

This will be a test of mental strength and physical resilience for just one long day, providing a small insight into the struggle many ME sufferers have to overcome each and every day of their lives.

As a dad to two small gorgeous but very demanding people, much of my training over the next 4 months will need to take place in the dark before and after work and parenting hours adding to the lack of sleep.

The ME Association campaigns hard to get ME recognised as a severe neurological illness. Their helpline provides essential information and support to adults and children who have ME/CFS, and to their families and carers. They also fund biomedical research into the physical nature and causes of ME/CFS.

Please donate here, either to support this fantastic cause, or simply to ensure I have no excuse to bow out early!
