Great News:  we Hit the target! Many thanks to all supporters!

Another Cake Sale on December 11 Helpdesk to raise 630 €, the sale of the christmas celebration another 450€ and the last Self-made Apple-Chips 200€.  Selling self-made apple chips on October 11 helped to raise another 103 € (90 GBP) :-)

Based on an initiative of our most famous Muffins baker Ingrid Huber, the German Market Access team at GSK organized a cake sale (plus self-made dried apple chips) on October 10th which achieved 652,31 € (570 GBP)!

On September 25th and 26th we raised in total 478,81 Euro (ca. 427 GBP) by selling goods from the GSK OPSU-Team plus self-made dried apple chips from my garden.

The money I raise through Trek for Kids, will be used for this programme and help that more children and their families receive the critical care they need:
£
25.00
 – Will pay for a series of life-saving medical vaccinations for 3
children including Measles, Tuberculosis, Polio, and Hepatitis B

£5.00 – Will pay for a measles vaccination for 2 children caught up in an emergency

In Ethiopia 184,000 children under five die every year, mostly due to preventable and treatable causes. We know that immunisation is one of the most successful health interventions, preventing the death of millions of children every year. Yet in Somali Region, Eastern Ethiopia, there are huge inequalities which determine whether children and their families receive the vaccinations they need. This includes: shortages in trained health workers, a lack of vaccinations available, and difficulties in accessing the most remote communities. As part of the GSK and Save the Children Partnership we are working together in Ethiopia to contribute to a reduction in the number of children dying from Vaccine Preventable Diseases in the hardest to reach communities.

Some of our biggest successes to date include:

• Training 160 Community Health Workers who have reached local communities with vital health education on the importance of vaccinations
• Providing eight solar fridges which have been installed in health facilities where many communities are not yet being immunised, so that vaccines can be kept cold
Supporting over 6,000 children and 11,000 women to receive vaccinations in
27 of the hardest to reach communities, which don’t have a health facility of their own.

The pictures below are just 2 examples from a previous fund raising activity (in Uganda) showing how you could improve peoples life with quite little amounts of money.

  • The family on picture 1 had to sleep on the muddy ground which gets wet in rainy seasons and increases the risk of getting sick, especially for the children. However, the house was too small for the beds. So, we had first to build a larger house for them (600 €) which you can see on picture 1. The mother felt on their knees and gave us a bag with 20 eggs (the best eggs I have ever eaten :-)) as a 'Thank you' when we visited them.
  • The family with the 2 children (pictures 2 to 4) had a small hut with a leaking thatched roof (picture 2). When we visited them, the mother was suffering from Malaria (the father was absent) but very grateful for the new house (500 €) protecting them from rain during rainy seasons (picture 3 and 4).
