We fund medical research to give HOPE to future DIPG families

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Saturday 5th August 2017, a hardy group of 15 will try to swim 5.5km across Sheephaven Bay on the north coast of Donegal. This swim is in memory of my 9-year son, Finlay Marriott, who died of a rare and incurable form of childhood brain tumour (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) in 2014.

Donegal was Finlay's favourite place in the world. Last year we finally set his ashes free on the top of "Muckish", a beautiful peak in the Derryveagh mountains overlooking Sheephaven Bay. We will be heading towards that peak as we swim across a particularly choppy stretch of water from Downings to Marble Hill.

Every year (or thereabouts) we do something amazing to raise money for research into DIPG to help find a cure. As a group we call ourselves Finlay's Fighters but the registered charity we are supporting is called Abbie's Army. Take a look at their website to find out more about them: www.abbiesarmy.co.uk, and you can keep up to date with Finlay's Fighters (and our training for this challenge) via our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/FinlaysFighters

Sheephaven Bay is a challenging body of water, even for those of us who are competent swimmers. I have always been a remarkably incompetent swimmer and struggled to do much more than a length when I started training in January. A lot of training in the meantime and a bit of the Finlay's Fighters' spirit on the day will help get us all across in one piece. This challenge is the very daft idea of Finlay's "Uncle Bus", (also known as Angus Monteith) and he had swept us along with a combination of his enthusiasm and coercion.

PLEASE help us raise money for such an important cause.

Chris Marriott, Finlay's Dad
