Story

In September 2013 at just five years old, my niece, Phoenix, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Within three days of diagnosis, she underwent major brain surgery and has been in and out of hospital ever since. She also endured 18 months of chemotherapy, which finished just over a year ago. The care and attention Phoenix received from staff at Addenbrooke’s hospital at the time and afterwards was truly amazing. My sister and her family now live in Germany and also receive top class care there in Dusseldorf. My niece, who is 10 this year and with the tumour still rearing it’s ugly head, is still undergoing treatment and is due to undergo six weeks of proton therapy (a type of targeted radiotherapy) during her summer holidays .
Phoenix remains positive and full of mischief! She really is tough and truly amazing, Such an inspirational little girl .
So I wanted to do my bit this year and raise money for a charity that has helped my niece and lots of other poorly children.
It’s called Toms Trust, a charity who work along with the Brainbow Trust based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. This amazing charity helps children with brain tumours reach their full potential.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children in the UK and for those who survive, their lives can be severely limited. Children treated for brain tumours have the greatest need for rehabilitation of all children treated for cancer.
Brainbow Trust and Tom’s Trust really makes a difference to the kids and their families.
Team Tom are dedicated to providing Clinical Psychology for children with brain tumours within UK hospitals. Their Clinical Psychologists work within a pioneering team ensuring that the children have access to tailored rehabilitation enabling them to reach their full potential.
The first service is Brainbow based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge the Clinical Psychologists work within this unique service, supporting children with brain tumours and their families from the point of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond.
One of my fund raisers this year is to take on the south coast challenge 25th/26th August .. walk /jog 100km in 24 hours ..
as well as various other fund raising along the way this year.
