We Raise funds for people with Brain Injury to Raise awareness of hidden disabilities

Story

Tracey Bowler, founder of Brainwave Independence Group: “In 2004, My son was in a road traffic accident, where he was ejected through the rear windscreen of a car.  He was in a coma for four months & spent the best part of year in hospital due to the extensive injuries he had sustained. My son is left with a severe brain injury, he is registered blind/severe partial sighted and has epilepsy.”

Over the last few years & the realization that there was no understanding, help or support for her son and his disabilities, mainly because they are hidden disabilities. Coming across so many other people in the same situation, which includes family members and friends, made it apparent that something had to be done in our society.

After getting together with a group of dedicated friends/people, we raised 5K to allow us to apply for our charity registration.  Working relentlessly in raising funds, asking for unwanted items from our community, which in turn allows us to sell things on social media, hold garage sales and have coffee mornings, events, raffles, tombola etc.

In 2017 we opened our first charity shop in Lowestoft, due to the tremendous support we receive from our community, none of this would have been possible without the help and support from individuals, community groups and the business sector that give their time and raise money to help us continue our life changing work.

While the charity is growing, they currently fund:

  • Trained support staff

  • Woodwork/craft shop

  • Placements at varied day/activity centers that are stimulating. And age appropriate to improve low self-esteem and self worth

  • Healthcare services like chiropody, dentists

  • Arrange meaningful days out

  • Purchase items that are specific to needs to improve a person’s lifestyle

Brainwave Independence Group are currently working towards opening a day centre in Lowestoft, this Summer! All of your support and any donations would help to work towards this and to supporting people in our local community.

About the charity

We are supporting people with Brain Injury & Disabilities. While supporting these people we are giving them back a great sense of achievement & self worth by helping them to live independently from their own homes. Finding placements that are suited to the individuals, which helps boosts their low esteem & gives individuals a great sense of value within our society.
