We support communities in Africa to build fulfilling lives

Story

Message from Dafydd and Katie:

We are so pleased that you are coming to our wedding, and if you were thinking of offering a gift we would be delighted if you would donate to a charity that means a great deal to both of us.  Dafydd"s brother and sister-in-law have been working hard on development projects in Uganda, and we would very much like to support and encourage them in their work.

Message from Harpenden Spotlight on Africa:

HSoA is raising funds to build a much-needed Health Clinic in a very poor community in Uganda to provide an Immunisation Centre that would save thousands of lives.

Background: Harpenden Spotlight on Africa (HSoA) is a charity which has touched the lives of the poorest of the poor in the slums of Mbale in East Uganda over the last 10 years. The community they serve is made up of people from the war-torn North and North Eastern areas of Uganda. They suffer from abject poverty. HSoA's philosophy is to empower the communities to build better lives for themselves through four strategies:

  1. Health: HSoA has trained over 250 Community Health Promotors who deliver essential primary health care which saves many lives.
  2. Clean Water: HSoA has now drilled over 30 boreholes which provide clean water to thousands of people, which further supports the health programme.
  3. Education: HSoA has built two primary and two nursery schools providing good quality education to over 1,000 children, who would otherwise not recieve any schooling.
  4. Economic Project Development: such as goat donation programmes to orphans and widows and fish farming projects that provide nutrition to the children..

The Campaign for a Health Clinic to provide an Immunisation Centre

Poor health is an important cause of poverty. Without immunisation, the community in which HSoA serve are sadly  destined to suffer high mortality rates.

HSoA has purchased and registered the land for a health clinic with the encouragement of the local community. The people are so excited by the project that they are donating bricks (see pictures of land and donated bricks).

As HSoA have experience of building two schools which were built in 2012 and 2013 (see pictures of the schools in Musoto and Wampeyo), they have the skills in order to deliver this project. The same experienced team will co-ordinate the building of the health clinic/immunisation centre.

If you have time, please watch the video to learn more about HSoA Community Health Promotors by copying and pasting the following link to your internet search engine:

Similarly, if you have time, please visit the HSoA Website:

HSoA is run by volunteers and so administration costs are minimal, ensuring that over 95% of money raised goes direct to Mbale, Uganda.
