Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
With your help, I am looking to raise £500 for a charity that funds research into pancreatic cancer. I will be cutting my long hair into a pixie cut and donating it to the Little Princess Trust who provide real hair wigs (free of charge) to boys and girls who have lost theirs to cancer treatment.
Pancreatic cancer is the silent cancer. In the early stages, when it is most treatable, symptoms are often vague and unrecognised. Half of cases are diagnosed in A&E when the cancer is advanced enough to cause abdominal pain or jaundice. Because of this, pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all 22 common forms of cancer with only 3% surviving a further 5 years after diagnosis, a figure that has not improved in over 40 years. Patrick Swayze, Luciano Pavarotti and Alan Rickman survived 20, 14 and 5 months, respectively, after being diagnosed with the disease.
For cancers that have received a lot of funding, survival rates have improved hugely, a good example being breast cancer which has increased from 50% to 80% in the last 40 years. Research into pancreatic cancer has attracted as little as 1% of all donations in previous years, a shockingly low amount considering its high death rate.
The pancreatic cancer research fund aims to raise funds for new research, be an advocate for pancreatic cancer patients and argue for a fair allocation of cancer research funding and attention.
Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated.
