Story

We are trying to answer the age old question of "is dancing a sport or art?"

Well what a better way to answer this question then by staging a poll in aid of Sport Relief.

Donate no matter how small along with your answer whether it be sport, art or both. Then maybe at the same time as raising some money for a good cause we can finally have an answer to a question that has been a topic of debate for years.

Some believe that dancing is a sport as it requires athleticism. You have to be strong and flexible and have a lot of stamina and endurance. Dance can be physically demanding - through the jumps, kicks, turns, lifts - pushing yourself to your physical limits.

Football training consists of one 2 hour practice a week and a match lasts for 90 minutes, so say they have one match a week and one practice that would equal to 3.5 hours of physical training per week. Where as a dancer will be in the studio five days a week for 2 hours, that alone is 10 hours of physical activity a week and that is not including the shows and performances or even competitions that they may be rehearsing for.

Others believe that dancing should not be branded as a sport as it is an art. They believe the definition of a sport is to compete and be competitive. Although some dancers may enter competitions the best performers may never have entered one. Would that mean that it is only classed as a sport if you have competed and if not then it is just an art form? Some say it is not a sport as it comes under the arts and humanity section and then there are the dancers who believe that you would not class theatre as a sport so why would you class dance.

Then there are the people who believe that dance has the physical endurance of a sport but the beauty and elegance of art so believe it is a category in itself. Dance takes physical and mental training same as sport but the outcomes are different. You train in sport to win, to beat the opposing team. You train in dance to create something beautiful and breathtaking. Both strive to perfection yet to reach different goals so should that be taken into consideration when deciding which category ‘dance’ should fall under.
