Dr Josephine Alleyne was a passionate advocate for Sickle Cell sufferers and believes that individuals with sickle cell disorder have the right to quality care. 

Josephine wrote a number of distinguished and innovative research papers, since the 1990's on pain management with sickle cell disease.

The papers were written before the time where practitioners took the time to understand the patient's experience and more importantly the black patient's experience. This was truly ground breaking.

Jo kept herself abreast of the treatment of sickle patients and offered to help me develop a lecture for nursing students in the next academic year. Jo was particularly upset by the death of Evan Smith most recently.

During the later stages of her illness, her writing and experience with sickle cell patients to some extent equipped Jo to understand her pain.

She was continually emphatic with my sickle journey right to the very end.
