Story

Some of you were kind enough to ask whether we were collecting donations for charity at the time of my brother's death and I was just too grief stricken to respond properly.  So now, after eight years of "resting" after my last marathon, I am currently training for a half marathon on April 19 along Sunset Blvd.

So it's a good fundraising opportunity.  I would like to support Worcester Cathedral Library which is 800 years old.  It was started by the doctor of Richard the Lionheart who became Bishop of Worcester on his return from the crusades.  He brought back from the Middle East extraordinary texts from all sides of the religious divides, which have been added to since.  These include the first ever book with fold out illustrations, books with ruby-encrusted illuminated manuscripts from Visigoth Spain, some of the most ancient existing examples of Flavius Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews and many books by Arab scholars developing the ideas of the Ancient Greeks.  Among the library's secular texts are books by early European explorers in Africa with their attempts to capture the look of giraffes, elephants and rhinos.  Of course, there are many exquisite Christian manuscripts from all over medieval Europe and the British Isles.  Even if supporting cathedrals is not generally your thing, the reality is that these books would almost certainly have been lost to history if left in Continental Europe or the Middle East.

Pls designate which book you would like to sponsor with your donation - let me know if you need more assistance with this.  Alternatively, you can make a donation for the general upkeep of the library or cathedral.

Thank you very much for considering making a gift.
