Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 21st of August, whatever the weather, come rain or shine, I will be walking 5km in support of Walking With The Wounded.

At 33, a 5km walk sounds perfectly easy, unworthy almost of a donation almost. Where is the challenge? Well, 30 days before the scheduled date of the walk, I had a total hip replacement.

A total hip replacement marks the end of an era for me. A military career ended too soon, countless opportunities missed because I was in too much pain, time that I will never get back with my children. It allows me to look to the future with optimism, rather than dread. To be the parent my children deserve. To be the woman my husband married.

Why Walking With The Wounded? I am not sure that there could be a more appropriate charity. I was fortunate enough to enter in education after my termination from the RAF, not everyone will have that luxury. Nonetheless, the transition was hard. The world, although seemingly no different to the day before you joined, now feels different and it takes some time to realise that the world has barely changed at all, the change you see is in you. This adjustment period is seen time after time, across all three services, whether you have served 5 years or 25. It is important to realise you have been handed a toolbox worth it's weight in gold and you just have to work out how to apply it. Walking With The Wounded are here to help you use your toolbox and are undoubtedly an invaluable asset to support the transition into Civvy Street.

5km may seem small, but, it will mark a huge point in my personal recovery. I could not even consider a 5km walk today, however, with a never give up attitude, this goal will allow me to focus my efforts, to concentrate on my rehab, and, in turn, really make a difference to someone else in their moment of need.
