Story

14 staff from Family Housing association Wales will be taking on the Welsh 3 peaks on May 5th/6th. Raising awareness and money for Action Duchenne which is our chosen Charity of the year.

Here's a personal story from one of our staff at FHA -

My 16 year old son Cameron, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is a progressive Muscle wasting disease. He was diagnosed at 8 weeks old after having a heel prick test. As you can imagine, this was absolutely devastating I was told by the hospital to just go away and enjoy Cameron as he was unlikely to reach his late teens!

Cameron stopped walking at age 10 and is a full time wheelchair user. This is really hard for him, as you can imagine as he cant do anything for himself. However, he amazes me everyday with his courage, outlook on life and determination. He attends mainstream schooling and is just about to sit his GCSE'S with the possibility of going to university. I never thought this would be happening when he was first diagnosed. I wasted so many precious years wondering how long I would have my son for ( I still do if I am honest) but finally feel that there is hope that treatments will soon be available to boys with Duchenne which will enable them to achieve their goals and to go on and lead independent lives.

Here we are 16 years later and Cameron is doing really well, thanks to the amazing research that is going on and on-going physiotherapy and regular heart check ups at great Oldmand street.

Thanks to my amazing colleagues at FHA for taking on this Challenge, further vital funds will be raised for Action Duchenne. FHA have been on this journey with me since Diagnosis and have offered me amazing support, through the very hard times which I will be eternally grateful for. Working here has been a sanctuary for me as without having a purpose to come to work and focus on other issues I don't know where i would be today, to continue to work for such a supportive organisation has helped me be the person I am which gives me the strength to continue on this journey with Cameron.

Get behind the team who will be tackling Pen a Fan ,cadiar iris and snowden in 24 hours on May 6th 2017.
