Florence Annie Harding-Day is the beautiful daughter of Jennifer Harding and Ashley Day. She was born on the 5th of February 2017 and sadly passed away on the 25th of February 2017.

Born with a rare and as yet undiagnosed muscular weakness that affected her entire body, Florence was very ill from the start and unable to perform many of the basic functions that we all take for granted. We knew that her life would be short but were also determined that it not be without meaning.

Moving to Helen House in Oxford during the final days of Florence's life, allowed us to spend some quality time with our daughter and create precious memories that we will cherish forever. Though Florence's fate was unbearably sad, we also had some of the happiest moments of our life with her. This was only possible because of the amazing place that is Helen House. Thanks to them, we were able to take Florence out of the sterile hospital environment she'd spent every day in since birth and introduce her to the real world. She was able to go outside for the first time and feel the wind and sun on her face, she met and stroked a dog and spent hours with her grandparents and great grandmother. Jen and I were able to sleep in the same bed as her, curl up on the couch to watch TV with her and generally care for her in ways that were not possible in hospital.

Helen House has the best, most compassionate staff we've ever encountered in the medical world. They helped us to care for Florence in exactly the ways we wished for her and bent over backwards to accommodate her and us. They are real heroes. The fact that Helen & Douglas House is able to do all of this - while also providing support for parents, including a living space and three meals a day - without charging a penny has renewed our faith in people and society.

Now we just want to give a little back to show our enormous gratitude and to help ensure that other parents and children receive this heavenly support in the future.

From Florence's birth to her passing and beyond, many people have asked us how they can help and, apart from a few practical things and being on the end of a phone for us, we haven't really been able to come up with much. When your daughter has an incurable, untreatable and undiagnosed genetic condition, there are few things we can really ask of people that will make a difference. But by honouring Florence's memory and donating to Helen & Douglas House we can at least make a difference to the lives of other desperately unlucky families and support the selfless people who choose to work there.
