Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am doing the walk as a personal challenge and hope to see some of Britain’s finest scenery along the way. I’m setting out from Lands End on 6/4/19. It’ll take me 90 days to walk 1350 miles. I am avoiding roads as much as possible and using about 8 long distance footpaths (each one a normal walking holiday in itself!), joined up by short sections of several more. Consequently it will be about 50% longer than doing it on roads, but a lot more fun!

So why this particular challenge? it’s not exactly unique to do this one - called LEJOG for short(!) To start with, I can blame it on my aunt, who in 1949 rode on horseback all the way from Lands End to John O’Groats, AND back. She is the first woman to have done this and was just aged 24 at the time. She had the added difficulty of living with Type 1 diabetes, which she developed in infancy, shortly after insulin was discovered. She grew up to be a very determined person with a passion for horses- she ran a riding stables with 9 horses. Sadly she died aged 33, but my mother always told me about her and her remarkable feat. When I came to live in Cornwall, 30 years ago, Lands End was always that bit more significant for me. I recently  obtained her diary from 1949 and was completely fascinated by the account of her journey. The seed was sown!

So why Cornwall Hospice Care? While I’m out there having such a wonderful adventure, three months of unbridled pleasure (pun intended!), I need to link it to a very worthy cause - to give me strength when the going gets tough. The two hospices in Cornwall have given enormous support to those in their time of need, and to their families. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated team who devote themselves selflessly  to their work. Like most hospices they are almost entirely run on charitable donations. Take a look at their website and see all they do.

Our dear friend Sara, who was my wife’s teaching colleague and soulmate was a truly inspirational person and kept strong and positive in her fight with breast cancer through the support and excellent care she received from St Julia’s Hospice.

Please give generously to this amazing organisation, and think of me slogging out the miles...so you don’t have to!
